  2. I have not yet seen the film, but your analysis has whetted my appetite. Films often make unintended comments. The visuals sometimes go against the stated intent. One of my friends who has seen the film thinks that it is only a subtle attempt to glorify the White Man's Burden. I reserve comment, but your article is a welcome corrective.

  6. i think the writer has gone overboard in praise of a movie that is nothing more than 3D+slumdog millionaire.. if one wants to see movies really of oppressed and their fight, one can watch Spartcus, both old and new.. then Charlie Chaplin's movies like Modren times, Poverty, Great Dictator... and not to mention Umar Mukhtar.. also Eisenstein's October, Battleship Potemkin, Strike..

two positive points that this movie has.. it shows that profit is what drives capitalism and second when military head disconnects live pictures of devastation faced by 'aliens' that can stirr the minds of his own people.. which exactly done by capitalist govts and media.. but ironically the movie 'Avatar' is also doing the same.. disconnecting the people from reality and sympathy if comes, comes for alien not humans.. and after one leaves hall, no aliens on earth, no sympathy.. if we see more deeply, working people do not need sympathy.. they are not beggers, they are makers of averything.. they need education to learn to fight, to make aware them the power in them that this movie fails to do..

.. now coming to this movie's wrong side.. plenty of them..
..its a Ramayan in 3D.. 'Badi te neki di jit'.. but away from reality..
.. whole plot is idealist and non-scientific.. so to show misery of people and their fight, one must be idealist and non-scientific first, what non-sense..!!

  9. ... it thoroughly exhibits the fire-power and technical advancements like the robots that can imperialists have.. so they can't defeated without the help of 'divine power'..

... the hero of film goes to alien clan, falls in love with the daughter of head of clan and then same old 'bollywood' rubbish.. so hero fights because of his lover, not because of any socio-scientific reasons.. sorry, revolutionaries don't do that way.. and nor they want to make a revolution because they have sympathy for downtrodden..

..and many people just take it as entertainment, for them i want to ask .. shouldn't our entertainment be humanistic.. see Chaplin, he can entertain while touching sensitive topics and making mockery of Hitler in 1940..

.. as the writer has pointed out that movie makes one to live in alien land.. that exactly one good movie should not make the viewer feel.. people enjoy more of its special effects than what is going on there in movie..

... and if these directors are so much moved by misery of people and fight against injustice, then but about Paris commune, october, china.. why don't they take risk of being called communist..!!.. these people will never make a movie which will show the power of masses.. they can only raise a cult of hero.. because the don't fear from heroes, they can knock down heroes but not masses.. they can make movies on Che Guevara at the most.. but never risk of showing Paris commune, october, china..

.. for showing people's misery one don't need 2000 crores, it can be shown in very less amount and much better than this.. and we need people like Safdar Hashmi, not camerons etc. etc. etc. ..

  12. ‘Avatar’: Mysticism Masquerades As Militancy
    .. an article on http://www.plp.org/challenge/2010/1/20/avatar-mysticism-masquerades-as-militancy.html
James Cameron’s new movie Avatar is on its way to becoming the highest-grossing movie of all time. In many ways, the content of the movie is secondary. In a capitalist society it is perfectly acceptable for someone to spend $500 million making a movie that will bring in many billions of dollars, while billions of workers suffer every day. The content of the movie is important, however. The movie clearly takes place in an advanced imperialist society. A precious natural resource called unobtanium has been discovered on Pandora where the Na’vi live and the U.S. Marines attack the Na’vi for the profit of a U.S. company. Replace the Na’vi with Iraqi and Afghan workers and unobtanium with oil and the movie would be about contemporary U.S. imperialism.
Avatar has many aspects that PLP members and friends can use to further the discussion: The film depicts soldiers who turn the guns around and fight against their commanders. Importantly, however, this is not a mass, military-wide movement. Only two soldiers rebel and they make no effort to recruit other soldiers to their principled fight. One of these two soldiers is a powerful Latina character and there is an anti-sexist message. The main female Na’vi character is a warrior who fights side-by-side with her male partner.

  13. Toward the climax of the movie the army attacks the natives with their full force, an attack that is provoked by the unification of multiple Na’vi tribes. On screen and in real life, the unity of workers is what scares the bosses more than anything. The movie also demonstrates the futility of pacifism. The military is relentless and brutal and only by actively fighting back do the Na’vi have any hope for victory.

The movie is draped in a mysticism that gives the movie an overall pro-religious feel. There is a “Great Spirit” that connects all of the living things on Pandora. In the end, the inhabitants of Pandora rely on this Spirit to overcome the imperialist army. In other words, it is religion, not the collective might of the Na’vi that make the difference. Religion, however, is a pacifying not a liberating force for the working class. Only a militant working class, organized around communist dialectical principles, can guarantee it’s own freedom.
